also what is actually happening on the sample when it is sprayed into the fire?
IIRC spraying sample into the fire is not part of the normal absorption spectroscopy techniques. fire that will change the chemical content of samples. Samples are usually volatile and (preferably a black body) of the light source is divided and direct the relative amounts received, at different wavelengths, versus the distance through carefully controlled than the sample evaporates.
